Popular Local GP to Retire
POPULAR doctor Mick Eames is retiring from his Market Rasen practice after more than 30 years of looking after the health of local people.
The 59 year old started work in the former Gordon Field Surgery before the current practice was built in January 1979 and he now plans to spend more time in the garden and at a house he has near Rome, Italy.
Dr Eames always wanted to work in medicine. He attended the University College London (Medicine) in 1969 and qualified in December 1974. He spent a year in house jobs pre-registration and then went through a three year GP training scheme in North London.
Born in Bedfordshire, he considered joining practices in Derbyshire and Herefordshire but it was meeting Dr Graham Parry in Market Rasen that made his decision about where to work.
"As soon as he met Graham, he knew that he wanted to work with him in the town. They got on so well," Mrs Sue Eames said.
"Graham has been retired for 10 years but it was Mick's meeting with him 31 years ago that was the deciding factor about where he would work as a GP."
Alongside his work in the Rasen surgery, Dr Eames has also been involved in the Primary Care Trust and the King's Fund.
A lifelong love of sport has seen the GP take part in athletics, rugby, hockey and cricket. He played rugby for university and when work and family took up more of his time, Dr Eames kept fit by jogging regularly and entering Lincoln's half marathon races. He played cricket for social team Poseurs.
Of Italian descent on his mother's side, Dr Eames is looking forward to spending time at his house in Italy and he intends to spend time between the continent and the UK. He is currently renovating a house near Abbruzo but will regularly pop back home to tend his garden.
Sue and Mick have been married for 37 years. They have three sons and one daughter, and three grandchildren.
