Independent review to look at lab closure proposals
THE IRP, the independent expert on NHS service change, has started a review into the microbiology laboratory at Lincoln County Hospital, and is calling for local input.
Health Secretary Alan Johnson has asked the IRP to carry out the review and provide advice to him following a storm of protest at plans by the hospital to close it.
The IRP will advise the Health Secretary on whether the proposals for changes to the microbiology laboratory will ensure the provision of a safe, sustainable and accessible service at United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust, and if not why not.
The IRP may make additional observations in relation to the proposals and will make recommendations to the Health Secretary on how to proceed in the best interests of local people.
The IRP will visit the area to see the facilities and meet local people. The visits will also provide an opportunity for the IRP to hear evidence from a range of interested parties, including residents, local authority representatives, interest groups, clinicians and other staff.
The IRP will make recommendations to the Health Secretary by May 29 and he will take the final decision on changes.
Those who wish to contact the IRP to take part in the review can do so by calling 020 7389 8055 or by e-mailing - info@irpanel.org.uk.
