Husky Challenge for Maxine

A TEACHER at the Grammar School is taking on the Global Adventure Challenge to drive a team of huskies and a sled 250km from Tromso in Norway to Jukarssarvi in Sweden during the Easter break.

Maxine Jackson, who is assistant head teacher, said it was thinking about a dear friend and former colleague who had spent her last few days in St Andrew's Hospice in Grimsby, that decided Maxine to make this her charity, after her sister gave the idea to use the challenge to raise money for charity.

The trek, which will last for six days, is through rolling highlands, deep forest and frozen lakes into the heart of Lapland on the 'Husky Trail.'

Maxine said: "It is the camping in the snow which is worrying me and although I do lots of outdoor work with the Duke of Edinburgh scheme at school, I tend to cheat and sleep in my motorhome these days!

"Another thing that will help is that I am a skier and am told that although everyone falls off the sled from time to time, skiers have the best chance of hanging on!"

She will be given training on how to steer and brake the sled, harness the team of six huskies and feed and clean up after them.

However, during the week there will be no access to running water or electricity (don't ask about washing or toilet facilities!) and they will be living as Laplanders, experiencing living in tents, cooking in the wild.

"I hope to see the Aurora Borealis (The Northern Lights). This is not always possible but is worth the trip if it happens," she added.

If anyone would like to sponsor Maxine with her fund-raising for the hospice, please contact her on maxine.jackson@cgs.lincs.sch.uk
