Governors do u-turn on closure proposals
Tuesday 12noon GOVERNORS at Ludford School have reversed their decision to request the closure of the school after the end of this term, although the county council has not committed itself to comply with that request.
In March, the governors made the decision to request the county council to start the closure process as they believed it was the only option open to them, but now governors have unanimously decided to stop the closure process after hearing a detailed action plan from the group set up to stop the closure process.
Chair of governors Mary Bullivant, was not present at the meeting, which was chaired by vice chairman Martin Cordwell.
An action group of parents and disaffected governors, who had not agreed with the original decision, has campaigned relentlessly since then for the school to be given a chance to get their numbers up, which were forecast to be just 24 at the start of the next school year in September.
Spokesperson Vee Ridgley said the county council must now respect the change of mind by the governors and stop the closure process.
"The county council should stop the process as the guidelines for councils state that 'proposals may be withdrawn at any point before a decision is taken'," she said.
The decision by the county council is due on July 17, but there has been no commitment from the county council to stop the closure process.
Paul Holmes, Head of Provision Planning, said the proposed closure of the school was still in its six-week representation period, which closes on July 8.
"The county council will take into account all representations received during this period before making a decision on the next steps, " he said.
However, Ms Ridgley said: "We know the school can be a success from it's previous performance and this news gives us the opportunity we need to make sure that all options for the school are investigated," she said.
"There is much work to be done to revitalise it and we need the continued support of the local community."
The action group plans to have a public meeting soon for a full presentation of the 'Action Plan' and everyone involved will be invited to see what prompted the governors to change their mind.
