A banner-led charity walk in honour of a much-loved and much-missed great-great grandma from North Kelsey takes place across the Humber Bridge next weekend.

The Mary Ashford Memorial Walk aims to raise funds in aid of Macmillan Nurses in thanks for the support they gave to Mary Ashford, who died on September 19 last year aged 95.

Daughter Christine Husthwaite, who lives in Leicester, said her mum spent the last few weeks of her life at Clarence House, Brigg, being cared for by the nurses.

Until then, Mary spent 70 years living in North Kelsey, where she was married to late husband Jim and had two children Christine and Malcolm.

“There’s going to be more than 20 of us in the walk, including my youngest grand-daughter who is only two. We will walk up and down the side of the bridge as there will be a lot of little children taking part, carrying banners with mum’s photo. This will be followed by a picnic at the viewing area. Mum was a very much respected member of the North Kelsey community and supporter of North Kelsey chapel,” Christine said.

The Mary Ashford Memorial Walk starts on the south side of the bridge at 11am on Saturday September 13.

Christine said it was still too soon to say how much might be raised but “a lot” has been donated so far, while others walkers would be sponsored.

“It would be lovely if the event could become annual. We will have to see how it goes,” Christine said.

Anyone can join in the walk or donate on Justgiving.com/Jessika-rose.

Ring Christine on 07909 526 109 for details.
