Boosting tourism on the web

WEBSITE lookers can soon become website bookers - that was the theme of a presentation to West Lindsey tourism businesses from Gillian Richardson, marketing systems manager at Lincolnshire Tourism.

She told 42 business delegates and the West Lindsey Tourism Development Forum meeting at Uncle Henry’s in Grayingham that the county web team could help businesses access new marketing opportunities and in most instances the service would be free.

“Online booking is a tool which can highlight a business and give additional leads offering the opportunity to turn web lookers into web bookers. We always include links to a business’s own web site and this can lead to direct contact or enquiries,” said Gillian.

She added that businesses would always have control over the stock they wanted to sell online and there were no restrictions.

“Attractions and places to eat can also sell online through our website and in so doing we would be able to link them with other online tourism products such as accommodation and places to eat nearby. To take part businesses just need to be able to offer something which has a cost,” said Gillian.

Chairman of West Lindsey District Council’s Economic and Regeneration Committee, Coun Malcolm Parish, said the Forum had been a great success and had really highlighted opportunities offered by the web.

“It is a proven fact that online marketing brings more interest in a business and so each business needs to make the best use of their entry and data on the Lincolnshire Tourism website (www.visitlincolnshire.com). It should be remembered that this site also feeds the pages for Visit Britain, Enjoy England and East Midlands Tourism so the potential audience is massive,” said Coun Parish.

A number of prominent West Lindsey businesses are already members of the Forum Working Group and after the meeting they were joined by Michelle Marsh from the Hickman Hill Hotel in Gainsborough and Hazel Hammond from Sunnyside Up Farm Shop in Market Rasen. More small and medium size businesses could benefit from joining the group so if you are interested please contact Marion Thomas at West Lindsey on (01427) 676676 or marion.thomas@west-lindsey.gov.uk
