Animal rights protesters expected in area on Saturday

Tuesday 11am DOZENS of activists from around the country are expected to converge outside Highgate Farm at Normanby by Spital on Saturday afternoon.

The protesters - from animal rights protest group Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (SHAC) - are hoping to persuade owner Geoff Douglas from continuing to breed rabbits and ferrets which SHAC says go to Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS) and are subject to 'cruel and misleading animal experiments'.

Mr Douglas said that although he does supply HLS with animals, this is only a small part of his operation and he is entireley satisfied with the way HLS act.

"I don't believe my rabbits suffer in any way," he told the Mail in August, after a small tented protest camp was set up outside the farm.

SHAC, on the other hand, describe HLS as 'one of the most exposed laboratories in the world', where animals 'suffer and die in horrendous and totally invalid experiments'.

SHAC said about 500 protestors were expected outside the farm on Saturday.

Police said the lane running past the farm would be closed for safety reasons during the demonstration, which is expected to last from about 12 noon to 5pm.
