Adam Griffin loses his cancer fight

AFTER more than a year battling against bowel cancer, Adam Griffin has died aged 30.

Adam, whose Claxby parents Sue and Ken Griffin have for the last six months spearheaded a fundraising campaign to provide him with treatment following NHS refusal to pay for enhanced medication, died in a hospice in Monday night.

The Adam Griffin Cancer Appeal was closed down last week after the treatment it sought to pay for had proved ineffective in Adam's case.

Complete strangers and close friends gave generously to pay for courses of Erbitux intended to give impetus to his chemotherapy.

Through many donations, large and small, initiatives like the Claxby harvest supper and dances, Tealby father and son Jake and Oli Jarron's cycle circumnavigation of the county and sponsored runs, races and efforts such as his parent's Hadrian' Walk challenge, Adam saw a sum of 68,000 build up in five months.

A decision has yet to be taken on how the fund will be used.

It may go to the Bowel Cancer UK charity or if someone else locally in a similar position to Adam, suffering bowel cancer and peritoneal disease and fighting for treatment, is in need Mr and Mrs Griffin would consider them.

Prior to Adam's death, Mrs Griffin said latest scans showed that the Erbitux was not working for him. It was hoped that it could boost the efficacy of chemotherapy as it does for 50 percent of patients.

"We can only thank everybody that has helped us through their kindness and donations. They have been absolutely brilliant and their support has kept us going," said Mrs Griffin.

Adam was in a hospice at Esher, close to his Twickenham home.
