Residents at meeting treated with contempt by councillors

EDITOR – I am writing to you with regard to the recent developments surrounding Caistor Town Council.

I was appalled and disturbed by what occurred at the Extraordinary General Meeting on Friday June 19. The people who turned up were treated with contempt and disdain by a number of councillors.

Given the recent resignations the council should welcome local input in how we can go about regaining some stability. We were made to feel unwelcome from the off. No chairs were provided or offered for the public. You would have thought that a council with the foresight to ring the police five hours before the meeting as they were 'anticipating trouble', would have the foresight to put out a few chairs.

Also a number of inflammatory and condescending statements were made by councillors. On arrival at the meeting a councillor surveyed the members of the public and remarked 'the White Hart must be empty', alluding to the local pub, the last one standing in the town.

Another councillor referred to the public on a number of occasions as 'the mob'. And yet another councillor remarked 'there must be a free pint for anybody who turns up'. The age range at the meeting was 18 to 80, representing a broad spectrum of concerned citizens. Some councillors appear to take the peoples' legitimate interest in this time of crisis as a personal affront.

How are the people of Caistor supposed to work in conjunction with councillors who hold them in such little regard?

The people of the town are its greatest asset but the current crop of councillors seem determined to destroy any goodwill and ruin the relationship for good.

Over 40 members of the public turned out for the Big Clean-up and there has been lots of interest in Caistor in Bloom. If you are going to be intimidated and threatened by members of your own town council it won't be long before morale is at an all time low. We have already lost some longstanding, dedicated people to these bullies. We cannot stand idly by and watch them destroy Casitor.

So, again, I urge the council to stand down. If they truly believe they should be on the council they should have no problem engaging in a democratic process to get them there.
