Report 'was one-sided'

EDITOR – I feel that your article on Caistor Council's extraordinary meeting was rather one sided.

The meeting was arranged to elect a new chairman and a large number of people arrived, most of whom had never attended any of the monthly meetings of Caistor Council or previous AGMs, although they arrived in force for the last AGM.

I believe that at the last election there were 14 candidates for the 14 seats of the council which is to their credit as no other person in Caistor was prepared to stand. There was nothing undemocratic in this.

What was undemocratic was the behaviour of certain individuals at the last council meeting.

They refused to accept that the public could not speak at an extraordinary meeting of the council, and it was sad to see that certain councillors encouraged this action – hardly democratic behaviour. I was ashamed to be at a meeting where the aim was to intimidate the council by continually shouting out about democracy and demanding to speak.

It is to be hoped that whether new councillors are elected or co-opted the people of Caistor will not bow to the actions of a small organised group or we will finish with the councillors that they – and not the majority of Caistor – deserve.

Finally Councillor Strange has written effusively of the service Allan Caine has given to Caistor Council but tribute must also be paid to the excellent clerk and council members who have resigned particularly those long serving Councillors.
