IT was with such sadness to family, friends and neighbours heard of the death of John Edward Martin, who passed away at his home in Wragby.

John, aged 69, was born at Lissington and grew up in Holton Beckering with his sister Carole.

He was educated at the “Old Grammar School” in Wragby, before moving to the secondary school in Horncastle.

Upon finishing school, he went to work for Howard Crapp at Holton and then for Holton Power Farmers.

It was at that time he met his future wife, Barbara Boothby (Tilly), and the couple were married in West Torrington on April 12 1969.

They made their first home at Freshfield Farm, owned by Dougy Dunn, where they rented a bungalow.

John then moved on to working for Steve Kilmister, who also owned Barn Farm on the Torrington Road.

In 1970, John and Tilly moved to Wragby into a new house on Newton Close, where they remained to the present day.

Having become proud parents of their son Paul, the two became three and John and Paul became very close, enjoying each other’s company – a real father/son relationship.

Paul enjoyed the school holidays, when he could go to work with his dad who was then working for Dave Stephenson at East Barkwith

As a family they enjoyed family visits, trips to Skegness and especially Christmas time.

John worked hard over the years, moving onto employment with Peter Ireland at South Willingham, Holmes Woodyard in Wragby and Fosters at Langworth, before attending Riseholme Agricultural Institute which gave him the opportunity to start up his own gardening business, which he really enjoyed.

He loved meeting people, being outside and was so respected by many – affectionately called Harold or Steptoe.

Over the years John and Paul did so much together, attending the traction engine rallies, ploughing matches, the air show and of course Truck-Fest.

Even though father and son – they were the best of friends.

John also had much time for others and, whatever the weather, he would be out collecting for St Barnabas Hospice.

His barbecues were visited by many and, in quieter moments, he was so fond of his dog and the fishpond.

John is now survived by his wife Barbara (Tilly) and son Paul and will be missed by so many.

The Service of Thanksgiving was held at All Saints Church, Wragby, followed by cremation at Lincoln.

The Rev Mark Holden officiated and funeral arrangements were made by J Marshall of Market Rasen.
