A magnificent mum has scooped a national award for her fundraising, weeks after raising more than £100,000 for children’s brain tumour research.

Andrea and David Burkill were devastated when their daughter Claudia was diagnosed with an extremely rare and aggressive brain tumour in June 2011 at the age of just five.

Since then, the Market Rasen couple have devoted themselves to the care of Claudia her two sisters and brother, but have also been fundraising, setting up Claudia’s Cause.

Now Andrea has been honoured at the national Inspiration Awards for Women, picking up the Inspirational Fundraiser gong.

With the aid of the Claudia’s Cause Facebook page, which has almost 200,000 likes, Andrea and her family were able to raise £100,000 in just 13 days for the Children’s Brain Tumour Research Centre at the University of Nottingham .

Professor Richard Grundy, paediatric neuro oncologist and director of the Children’s Brain Tumour Research Centre, said: “We are so grateful for this welcome funding for our research programme and to Claudia’s mum for helping bring this vital research to the attention of so many throughout the world.

“This will enable our team to improve understanding of the underlying biology of paediatric brain tumours and help us to improve the treatments available to children like Claudia, through vital research.

“Thank you all for this sincerely valued support. It is phenomenal what you are achieving.”

Claudia, now aged seven, has a metastatic pineoblastoma tumour that is only diagnosed in the UK two or three times a year.

Brave Claudia has completed more than 40 sessions of radiotherapy and is still fighting, despite the tumour being inoperable.

You can support Claudia’s Cause by searching for it on Facebook, visiting www.claudiascause.co.uk or buying a Claudia’s Cause wristband, available from independent retailers in Market Rasen.
