Brigg’s new food bank has been officially opened by Town Mayor John Kitwood.

“I very much welcome Brigg’s inter-church venture of opening a local Food Bank,” said Coun Kitwood.

“While the UK comes to the aid of those overseas, it must not forget those vulnerable people in the local community.”

The project was launched at St Mary’s Church Hall, where local church members and Food Bank volunteers joined with the mayor and other local people at the official opening.

Brigg Food Bank now needs ongoing donations of non-perishable goods, such as tinned and package food.

At present, it cannot really accept fresh food, such as bread, cakes and vegetables, as obviously this type of produce creates its own storage problems.

Donations of non-perishable goods can be left at any of Brigg’s various churches and these will then be forwarded to Brigg’s Food Bank.
