A look back at Rasen's shopping heritage

The collection, which can be viewed in Rasen Hub, shows a time when there were no supermarkets or chain stores, just small businesses relying on their skills and personal service to retain and attract customers.

Adverts of that time, along with news clippings and photos, feature in the two binders created to expand the information depicted on the graphic panels.

These also contain copies of original stationery, such as completed invoices, bill heads and printed leaflets.

Not just shopping, it is a display of the retail, commercial and craft based trades of Market Rasen of some 70 to 100 years ago.

The trades featured will include shops, butchers, bakers, chemists and craftsman based trades, such as chair makers and stone masons.

It will also cover the Co-op from its start in Union street, as well as blacksmiths, ironmongers, drapers, and leather goods suppliers that, along with the blacksmith, were very important businesses in the days of the horse.

A small selection of original artefacts held by the RASE Heritage Society will be on display in the Hub window.

The display runs from September 16 to October 15.

Members of the Rase Heritage Society will be in attendance to answer any questions on Friday September 16, Saturday 17, Wednesday 21 and Saturday 24, between the times of 11am and 12 noon.

The event is part of the Rasen Hub launch of new facilities and opportunities to get involved in.
