WORKERS at Market Rasen’s flood storage reservoir made a rare discovery.
During routine inspection, the team discovered what they believed to be a newt six feet down a manhole.
A specialist team were called to rescue the creature, which turned out to be an endangered amphibian - a great crested newt.
After checking and confirming the ‘pot holing’ newt was the only one around, it was released into suitable, safe habitat close by.
“Market Rasen Flood Storage Reservoir has now been recorded as being home to these endangered amphibians and all future work on the site will be subject to approval by Natural England,” said Phil Smith, fisheries and biodiversity officer.
