Top marks for pupils after ‘new’ lessons

Pupils are getting top marks in reading and writing after a radical new approach to teaching at Tealby Primary School.

Lessons at the 70-pupil school have been transformed after headteacher Denise Popplewell decided to put enterprise at the heart of school life.

The approach means involving children in all key school decisions - even down to how they use spare school space and the subjects they cover in class.

Mrs Popplewell said: “It’s not just about turning children into entrepreneurs, it’s about giving them the chance to ask questions and find solutions to all kinds of things, from deciding what they learn to involving the entire school in our weekly school council and getting pupils to organise the annual sports day.”

The school is celebrating 100 per cent success in level five reading and writing and a host of other improvements in pupil performance.
