Children at Caistor Primary School have been dealing with a prickly subject lately.

They have been finding lots of poorly hedgehogs in the school grounds, which school secretary Liz Friend and teaching assistant Debby Langmaid have been hand-rearing and nursing back to health.

School council members decided to raise awareness of the decline of the British hedgehog – and funds for a local hedgehog hospital near Appleby – by holding a ‘spike your hair day’.

Everyone came to school with donations of hedgehog food like dried mealworms.
