Lessons on war at Caistor

Year nine students at Caistor Grammar school study the causes, course and effects of the First World war in history lessons and as part of this Andrew Spooner visited the school to deliver a presentation on the war, looking at the lives of individuals and the daily lives and routines of service men and women.

History teacher Marcus Croft said: “Andrew Spooner brings the First World War to life, helping students to see the experiences of the soldiers and the tragedies that unfolded over the course of the war in a way that textbooks can never hope to achieve.”

Mr Spooner took along more than a thousand objects, covering food, battles, surgery and surveillance and the students had the opportunity of handling some of the artefacts and get up close to the impact of the war.

Student Ethan Dolby said: “Very interesting to have the myths of the war debunked and to learn the real history.”

Student James Niles added: “It’s been a fascinating experience to learn about what actually happened in WW1.”
