Gardeners’ meeting and WI

The next meeting of the Barkwith and district Gardeners Association will be held this Friday, February 28 at 7.30pm in the village hall, when well-known gardening expert Harry Leach will be giving advice on lawns.

Members are invited to take a prize bloom from their garden for the flower of the month competition and new members and visitors are always welcome.

Barbara Stephenson and Jane Perkins were welcomed as new members at the recent meeting, together with a number of visitors.

The speaker was Captain Lines, a volunteer with Coast Watch, who explained the role of the volunteer team who, from their observation tower, react in times of need and alert the coast guard when there is an emergency.

They help children who become separated from their parents and told of instances where some, in spite of repeated warnings, allowed their children to play with inflatable dingies while they relax on the beach which resulted in them having to be rescued when swept out to sea.

The competition for a seaside postcard was won by Mary Hoban and birthday posies were presented to Rosarie Wright and Janet Kiddle.

Programmes were available for the Witham Group Produce and Handicraft Show and nominations were taken in preparation for electing the new committee at the annual meeting next month, when reports on the past year will be presented.
