If you’re having a clear out after the Christmas festivities, you may be surprised to learn how many items can be taken to recycling centres.

There are 13 Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) across Lincolnshire, with staff on hand to help dispose of your waste.

Lincolnshire County Councillor Reg Shore, Executive Member for Waste and Recycling, said: “Once Christmas is over and it’s time to take down the decorations, it’s a good opportunity to dispose of old items that Santa has replaced.

“HWRCs throughout the county are easy to use, and will take TVs, DVDs, computers, books, CDs, electrical items and clothes.

“Christmas trees - both real and plastic - will be accepted as well as cooking oil and small electrical appliances.

“Excess packaging such as cardboard or paper can also be taken along to HWRCs or disposed of in your appropriate bin for collection.”

“Another way to help make a huge difference and bolster Lincolnshire’s already excellent recycling record is to bring those batteries the kids have already exhausted. Batteries contain various hazardous metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium, zinc, manganese and lithium and can be harmful to the environment if they are disposed of in landfill. Recycling recovers materials that can be used to make new products, as well as saving natural resources and reducing the need to mine more.

“Good quality toys can of course be taken to charity shops, to be enjoyed by more children in future.

District Councils also offer collection services for household waste, providing kerbside recycling schemes and collecting bulky household items. Check with your local council to see what collections they can provide.”

• All Household Waste Recycling Centres are closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. For further information and details of your local Household Waste Recycling Centre, call 01522 782070 or visit www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/HWRC
