Paedophile pensioner faces jail for raping child

A pensioner has been found guilty of raping a young child and is now facing a lengthy jail sentence, Lincoln Crown Court heard.

Ambrose Clifton, 71, was also convicted of further charges of sexual activity with a child, causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, taking indecent photographs of a child and making indecent photographs of a child.

The rape charge involved a child under the age of 13.

Clifton denied all charges but was found guilty by a jury at Lincoln Crown Court after a two-week trial.

Recorder Gareth Evans QC granted Clifton bail and told him: “The sentence is inevitable.

“It is going to be a substantial prison sentence.

“I’m prepared to grant bail but you should be under no illusions as to what the sentence will be.”

Clifton, 71, of Main Road, South Reston is a former chairman of Brookenby Parish Council.

Prosecuting Felicity Gerry told the jury the offences came to light in October 2010 after the child made a complaint of being sexually abused.

Clifton’s computer was later examined and indecent photographs of the child were discovered.

Defending Timothy Spencer QC said Clifton was a man of previous good character.

And Mr Spencer said Clifton still continues to deny the offences.

Recorder Gareth Evans QC adjourned sentence to a later date.

Clifton will be sentenced on November 14.
