Garden club chief in historic child sex offences case

The deputy chairman of Market Rasen Gardening Club is at the centre of an alleged child sex scandal, it has emerged.

Pensioner Michael McCoy, known as Mike, is accused of a string of offences dating back more than 50 years.

Mr McCoy, 73, of North Willingham is accused of of two counts of indecently assaulting a girl under the age of 14.

Grimsby Magistrates’ Court heard how both offences allegedly happened in the Cleethorpes area between July 1958 and July 
1960.

He is also accused of seven counts of gross indecency with a girl under the age of 
14.

The court heard how these offences allegedly happened between July 1968 and August 1975.

Mr McCoy, who is also the gardening club’s treasurer, is a regular prizewinner at 
events.

He was last featured in the Rasen Mail back in April when he presented a prize to the winners of a gardening quiz at East Barkwith Village 
Hall.

Mr McCoy has not yet entered a plea for any of the alleged offences.

Magistrates have sent the case to Grimsby Crown Court where he is due to appear on Friday, October 11.

The case has been adjourned until this date and Mr McCoy has been given conditional 
bail.
