A burglar who stole a father’s expensive BMW during an overnight raid has been jailed for 12 months, Lincoln Crown Court heard.
Warren Cawley, 19, of Pelham Road, Immingham, was one of two men who raided the property in South Street, North Kelsey before taking the family car.
Prosecuting, Mark Watson told Lincoln Crown Court the noise of the break-in woke the family.
Mr Watson said the father looked out of the window to see his 5-series BMW being reversed into a gate post as the burglars made their getaway.
The court heard how a neighbour, also woken by the noise, then chased after the BMW car.
Cawley, who was driving, stalled but managed to restart the vehicle and drove away.
The neighbour recognised Cawley as a someone who had previously lived in the area and as a result police arrested the teenager.
Cawley has been handed 12 months at a young offenders’ institution.
No-one else has been prosecuted.
The court heard Cawley stole a set of car keys and £25 from the family home.
An estimated £2,000 worth of damage was caused to the car and the damaged wall cost £500 to repair.
Cawley admitted burglary and aggravated vehicle taking on November 27 last year.
He was banned from driving for 12 months.
His youth custody sentence will run consecutive to a four-month term imposed by Grimsby Magistrates’ Court last Thursday.
This sentence was for drugs and shoplifting offences.
Judge Sean Morris told Cawley: “This was a burglary to obtain a high value car.
“That was the attraction and you nearly got away with it.”
Defending, Laurinda Bower said the offence happened after Cawley returned to his former home village to visit friends.
She said another person entered the property and Cawley then drove the car away being handed the keys.
Miss Bower added: “There has been a recent cessation in this defendant’s offending.
“He would say that is because he gained his first proper employment earlier this year through an agency.
“He has been working at a factory in Grimsby.
“The stability has enabled him to form a relationship with a young lady and they have been residing together.”
