LINCOLNSHIRE Trading Standards is supporting the latest campaign by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) to warn people of unscrupulous traders that sell mobility aids on the doorstep.
A number of complaints have been received across the county where elderly or disabled people first receive a telephone call to make an appointment for an ‘assessor’ to visit them.
The telephone pitch is very persuasive and consumers often end up agreeing to a visit just to get them off the phone.
However, the ‘assessor’ is a salesperson and once in the house, the high pressure selling of these products begins. Again, to get rid of them, consumers generally end up buying expensive pieces of equipment which they may not really need.
