It was all about sharing memories as Briggensians countrywide made the annual pilgrimage to Elsham Golf Club for the reunion of the Briggensians Association, the organisation for former students of Sir John Nelthorpe School, Brigg Girls’ High School and Brigg Grammar School.

Thoughts were to absent friends, including former headmaster Brian Williams, former teacher John Slack and Adrian Gibbons, a long serving teacher at the school, who had both died recently.

One minute’s silence was held in their memory before John Hastings said grace and led the singing of the school song, Fortitudine. Keith Cawkwell, Chair of the Briggensians Association, welcomed guests and proposed the loyal toast.

Guest Speaker was former student Martin Robertson, who was at the school from 1971-76, and had plenty of memories to share with his contemporaries.

In a humorous speech, he described his days in the school’s boarding house.

“Sundays were interesting days,” he said. “We used to play pirates in the gym and I ended up breaking both arms.

“I remember going to visit a former pupil who was a vicar at Southwell and he treated us to a sherry party.

“The school in those days gave me some great opportunities.”
