Flag flies at half mast for former chairman

Tributes have been paid to a popular former West Lindsey chairman , who died last week, aged 80.

Irmgard Parrott served as councillor for the Cherry Willingham ward and was twice chairman of the authority.

Mrs Parrott had been diagnosed with terminal cancer earlier this month.

Her death comes just days after it was announced she had been recognised for her service to the community in the Queen’s Birthday Honours, being awarded the British Empire Medal.

To honour Mrs Parrott, the civic flag at the West Lindsey offices in Marshall’s Yard at Gainsborough will fly at half mast until her funeral.

Manjeet Gill, Chief Executive of West Lindsey District Council, said: “We are saddened to hear of the loss of Mrs Irmgard Parrott, who served on the council for many years, completing her service in May 2015.

“Our thoughts are with her family at this sad time.

“During her time at West Lindsey District Council Mrs Parrott was appointed as Chairman of the Council twice, in 2003 and again 10 years later in 2013.

“She was a well-respected ambassador of the council, who carried out her duties with passion and diligence.

“One of her favourite roles was being a member of the Lincolnshire Show Committee at the Council and she was passionate about the Churches Festival in the district.

“The civic office were in the process of organising a presentation of her British Empire Medal this week, and it is sad that Irmgard was unable to receive this.

“We will however, organise for her family to receive it on her behalf.”

Mrs Parrott was born in 1936 in Austria, where she was raised.

At the age of 18, she came to Gainsborough, to improve her English and it was here she met her husband, Len.

The couple made their home in Lincolnshire.

As well as her council duties, Mrs Parrott was proud to be a member of the WI, serving as chairman of the Lincolnshire North Federation from 1990 to 1994.

An expert at making craft displays out of sugar, she was the leader of the Market Rasen Sugarcraft Group.

Mrs Parrott also served for many years as a Parish 
Councillor in her home village of Cherry Willingham and 
was Church Warden at All Saints’ Church, Greetwell.
