He conquered China's Great wall and Peru's Inca Trail, now charity trekker Steve Boryszczuk is taking on his toughest challenge yet.

This November will see Steve go coast to coast in Costa Rica, from the Caribbean Ocean to the Pacific Ocean.

The 164 kilometre route will see trekkers tackle the rainforest, volcanos and more.

“I wanted to do it to mark my 50th birthday, but it didn’t happen, so now I will be tackling it at 51,” said Steve.

“It is definitely the toughest challenge to date.

“There are 18 of us doing it, but we have been told it is likely only six of us will complete the trek.”

The trek is considered so demanding, an offcial guide and doctors will decide each night if people are able to continue the next day.

“That is why I am really training hard for this challenge,” added Steve.

“Not only is it quite a distance, some of the route is very high, so we will have to cope with the altitude as well.

“Peru was really difficult, but I managed it, so I am hoping things will go ok this time too.”

The trek will consist of seven 12-hour days, with the first three in the rainforest.

There will also be two days climbing through mountainous volcanic terrain, before spending the last day white water rafting down a mountain.

But Steve won’t be with strangers this time round.

“Three people who did both Peru and the Great Wall with me are also going on the Costa Rica trek, so it will be good to have some friends there, we can encourage each other.”

Over the past few years, Steve has tackled 14 treks for different charities.

“I keep saying I am going to stop, but then something catches my eye and I keep going - I just have the bug,” he said.

“Last year I did five events, but this year I am concentrating on Costa Rica.

“Next year, I want to do the Sahara Desert trek and would like to do it for a children’s charity.”

There is a change of focus for Steve this year on the charity front.

Previous money raised has gone to an Alzheimer’s charity, in memory of his wife Michelle, but this year he will be trekking for Bowel Cancer UK.

It is a cause close to his heart, having lost his dad and sister to the disease.

“Then, when a school friend’s husband also died, that is what really spurred me on to do something this year,” added Steve.

As part of the fundraising effort, Steve is running a charity golf day at Welton Golf Club next month.

Teams of four are invited to take part in the event on August 18.

The cost is £30 per person, which includes a meal.

Steve is also organising his annual memory walk, when the money raised will be shared between Alzheimer’s Research and Bowel Cancer UK.

This year’s event has a new venue - Willingham Fayre at North Willingham.

The walk takes place on Sunday August 28 and there will be a choice of two routes - one covering five miles and the other three miles.

Registration is from 9am, with the walk starting at 10am.

Sponsor ship forms are available from Steve and at Willingham Fayre, or you can just pay £10 to walk on the day.

Children and dogs are welcome to join in the walk too.

There will also be a raffle and tombola on the day.

People re very supportive in whatever I do and I would like to thank them for that,” said Steve.
