'˜Bra'-illiant walk for Rasen surgery team

Staff at Market Rasen Surgery are taking a dressing down to raise money for a cancer charity.

Eight women will be taking part in the Walk the Walk London Moonwalk for breast cancer causes - dressed in brightly coloured and decorated bras.

Dr Therese Nation, practice nurse Heidi Watson; dispensary staff Amanda Trumpton, Helen Reid and Julia Weeks, and reception staff Alison Richards, Louise Parkinson and Sue Felstead-Solley will join more than 17,000 women taking on the 26.2-mile marathon on May 14.

“This is quite a challenging event,” said Alison Richards.

“We have been in training since January and this weekend did a 20-mile walk, but we haven’t done it in our bras yet as it has been too cold.”

Walk the Walk came into being in 1996, when 13 women power walked the New York City Marathon in their bras to raise money and awareness for breast cancer.

What started out as a one-off fundraising event, has blossomed into a thriving multi-million pound charity, raising to date in excess of £100 million for vital breast cancer causes.

The Rasen fundraisers set themselves a target of £1,000, but this has already been passed; now they hope to reach £1,500.

Alison added: “People have been very generous. A cake stall raised £188 and we have collection pots, sponsor forms and badges at the surgery. Every donation counts no matter how small - it does make a difference.”
