New home for mechanics

A MARKET Rasen business that has been servicing and repairing cars for more than four decades has closed its doors for the last time.

GB Motors started life in Chapman Street in 1966 and two years later moved to Serpentine Street, where it has been a familiar site for the past 43 years.

But owner George Bycroft isn’t hanging up his spanners just yet, he will be offering his wealth of experience just up the road in Tealby at Youngs Garage.

“There have been many changes in the design and reliability of cars since I started out, and today’s vehicles rely much more on diagnostic equipment,” said George.

“Youngs Garage has a much larger and more modern workshop and has invested in all the equipment, so working with them I feel I can still offer my customers a great service.

“The two lads there are as good as any you’ll find in any garage and between the three of us, we will have almost 100 years of experience.”

And George will also be continuing with his MG restoration and servicing.

“The ethos at Youngs Garage is very similar to mine in that they are mechanics and not just fitters,” added George.

“It’s good to know that in an era of the ‘fast fit tick box servicing’ traditional, thorough repair work can still be found locally.”
