A traditional barbers shop opens in Market Rasen in November, promising a modern touch.

James Swales has worked in the industry for more than 20 years in America, Australia, Dubai and Spain, which he says helped him hone his skills in traditional, modern and urban barbering techniques.

Originally from Doncaster, James and his family returned to the UK five years ago and made their home in Epworth, North Lincolnshire, where he opened a barbers.

“With much hard work, it grew into a successful business, which gave me the idea to look at other areas where I could offer the same great service, which led me to visit Market Rasen,” he said.

Although Market Rasen has several hairdressers and a barbershop catering for men, James believes there is a gap in the market for the ‘Mens Room’, which will open in the former Indulgence shop in Market Place Walk. When the new shop opens, the day-to-day running of the old barbers in Epworth will be left with its staff, as James concentrates on his new business.

“Men feel more comfortable in a typical barbershop surrounding. I am also creating an environment that transports man and boy back to a time, where the barbershop was considered the place for all gentlemen to relax and get away from life’s pressures, for a little time at least, have a friendly chat and a laugh,” he said.

“You’ll also find some ‘mod cons’ too, such as gaming, wi-fi, live sports, newspapers and mags, refreshments and a loyalty scheme, all complimentary with a view to expanding into ‘hot towel cut throat razor shaves’ depending upon client demand.”

Working with James will be Dane Whiley, who has spent two years in Spain cutting hair for expats and Spaniards.
