Celebrity guests have opened a new garden centre in Glentham which has created 40 jobs for the area and is dedicated to supporting Lincolnshire suppliers.

The garden centre was officially opened on Saturday March 23 by children’s television character Peppa Pig and Lincs FM DJ Sam Kirk.

Building work on The Willows started in May 2012 and the site was finished at the beginning of March

The Willows is the brain child of local farmer David Nelstrop who is thrilled with the finished site.

He said:”Despite the snow we’ve had a great turnout for the first day.

“I wanted to create a high quality retail and tourist attraction, somewhere that the local residents would be proud of.

“I am really pleased with the outcome and hope that it will be a great success.

“We are already planning phase 2 which is the creation of a fishing lake, log cabins and static caravans which will be completed in 2015.”

The Willows is championing Lincolnshire produce and the building has been designed with lots of character to reflect its links with the local farming community; as you walk through to the restaurant you can see the ‘chitting tray wall’, quite simply a wall clad with lots of potato chitting trays which have been donated by local farmers.

All the boxes display the name of the Lincolnshire farmer who has grown or continues to grow potatoes in the county.

Willows manager Rachel Cooper said, “We have room for more names, so if any local farmers would like to see their name featured on the wall please do get in touch.”

To mark the occasion, the first 250 visitors through the door were treated to the gift of a potted Narcissus.
