Rasen was gridlocked with traffic for much of Thursday.
A backlog of traffic was reported to run from St Thomas’s Church, all the way through the Lincoln Lane junction in Middle Rasen and back towards Faldingworth.
“We need a bypass for the town. I was always against shelving it when I was on the council some 20 years ago, so now with all the development what will happen but more misery and further gridlock,” said Bill Marshall, owner of J Marshall Funeral Directors.
West Lindsey District Councillor, Giles McNeill also tweeted: “Major traffic disruption through Market Rasen. Tail back stretches back to the Kennels on Lincoln Road past Middle Rasen.”
A spokeswoman for Lincolnshire Police said there had been no accidents reported in the area as to cause the congestion.
She suspected the congestion may have been caused by extra traffic using the A46 following the closure of the A158 Wragby Road been closed at Sudbrooke due to a gas leak.
