Major resurfacing work will take place on the M180 in August, providing a new road surface along 13 miles of the motorway between Doncaster and Scunthorpe.

The Highways Agency will be closing sections of the M180 over a number of days and nights in order to carry out essential carriageway maintenance and safety improvement.

The work will be taking place in 7 phases, with no work taking place over the August bank holiday weekend:

1-4 August – work takes place at the M180 Ings roundabout (M180 junction 0 / M18 junction 5). Full weekend closure from 8pm on Friday until 6am on Monday.

4-6 August – work takes place on the eastbound M180 between junction 1 and junction 2. Work begins at 6am on 4 August and one lane will be closed during the day until 8pm. After 8pm the eastbound carriageway will be closed until 6am on 6 August.

6-11 August – work takes place on the eastbound M180 between junction 2 and junction 3. Work begins at 6am on 6 August and one lane will be closed during the day until 8pm. After 8pm the eastbound carriageway will be closed until 6am on 11 August.

11-15 August – work takes place on the westbound M180 between junction 3 and junction 4. The westbound carriageway will be closed overnight from 9pm until 5.30am.

15-20 August – work takes place on the westbound M180 between junction 3 and junction 2. Work begins at 6am on 15 August and one lane will be closed during the day until 8pm. After 8pm the westbound carriageway will be closed until 6am on 20 August.

20-22 Aug – work takes place on the westbound M180 between junction 2 and junction 1. The westbound carriageway will be closed overnight from 8pm until 6am.

26-28 August – work takes place on the westbound M180 between junction 3 and junction 4. The westbound carriageway will be closed overnight from 9pm until 5.30am.

Highways Agency Project Manager Steven Wright said:

“We acknowledge that closing the M180 for long periods will be disruptive to drivers and residents. However, we have planned the work to minimise the disruption while maximising the amount of work taking place. If we were to carry out the planned work during night time closures only, the resurfacing work would take a number of months to complete.

“By working around the clock, we will be able to substantially resurface the length of the M180 from its junction with the M18 near Doncaster all the way through to junction 4 near Scunthorpe, in a period of 4 weeks. We will also provide new bridge joints, white lining and road studs and use the closures to carry out other general maintenance and inspection work. This will mean we should not have to carry out further construction work in this area for a long time.”

During all of the closures clearly signed diversion routes will be in place. Details of these routes plus further information about the work will be available on the Highway Agency website.
