Brigg residents call on Network Rail for noise reduction measures
Residents in the Burgess Road area of Brigg are urging the town council to ask for greater consideration of noise levels from Network Rail.
At their monthly meeting, councillors heard the increased usage of the railway line through Brigg for freight should be welcomed as a positive development.
However, the impact on residents of that area and also on Bigby High Road in terms of night time noise and shake is considered too great.
Town Councillors recognised that since the line was upgraded for freight there were far more trains using the Grimsby and Humber Bank route to Sheffield.
In a letter, resident Mr J Smith expressed concern on the impact on the structure of properties and also at night time noise.
He wondered if traffic could be required to slow as it passes through the residential area.
Coun Rob Waltham told colleagues the issue is being taken up by North Lincolnshire Council with Network Rail.
Coun Mike Campion said: “We do want to keep this line alive and eventually bring back freight traffic - but we don’t want residents to have sleepless nights.
“There are welcome signs of increased use of the line, a lot of money has been spent on upgrading it.”
It had also been observed vehicles are having to wait on Bigby Road when the level crossing gates are shut far more than for many years.
At the moment passenger trains only use the line on Saturdays and councillors have long hoped, since the line’s upgrading, passenger traffic would be made more frequent.
