Are you eligible for the scheme?
The Brigg area is to be part of a North Lincolnshire Council scheme to help people with access difficulties get to work, education and training.
The Wheels 2 Work North Lincolnshire scheme will hire out 10 Piaggio Zip scooters and provide 20 bicycles for people, aged 16 and over, who have no suitable means of transport to get to work,college or training.
“Wheels 2 Work North Lincolnshire will help break down people’s access to transport barriers, so they can take up opportunities that would otherwise be very difficult or impossible,” said Coun Liz Redfern, leader of North Lincolnshire Council.
“This will also create huge social benefits for those involved, giving them more independence and improving their self esteem.
“Helping people access jobs and training is vital if we are to boost the economy and cut unemployment.
“We have a lot of skilled people in North Lincolnshire and we want to keep those skills locally and to get that job at the end.”
The scheme will give people breathing space for up to 12 months, either to save enough cash to buy their own vehicle or time to sort out an alternative way to travel
To apply for a scooter, applicants will need a full or provisional driving licence and agree to take a one day compulsory basic training course, paid for by the council.
Applicants must provide evidence of an offer of employment, place at college or training course.
For people already in work, college or training, a scooter will only be provided if they can prove they are at risk of failing to attend due to transport difficulties.
A scooter will cost an initial deposit of £40, together with a monthly fee of £60, which includes everything needed to get on the road - insurance cover, breakdown cover, road tax, safety equipment, security lock servicing and maintenance.
A bicycle will cost a one off charge of £30, which includes security lock, lights, safety helmet and hi-vis vest.
