A Market Rasen cigar connoisseur has attracted national attention with the auction of his huge cigar collection.
The man, who declined to be identified, was expected to earn thousands of pounds from the sale.
Dozens of boxes containing hundreds of fine cigars of more than 40 different types were put on the market last week.
“It is by a country mile the best cigar collection we’ve ever seen,” said Paul Cooper of Scunthorpe-based CJM Auctioneers.
“Many people will no doubt be rather surprised that these things cost so much, but at the connoisseur level cigars are as complex as fine wines- and just as expensive.
“This chap took his interest so seriously that he established links with a merchant in Massachusetts so that he could acquire supplies that were not even on sale in this country. These included premium aged and matured cigars and boxes produced in limited editions. Many of the boxes of 20 or 25 cost in the £300-£400 price range.”
Paul said the collection is so special bidding came from around the country, involving private buyers, cigar merchants and the cigar lounges that are increasingly fashionable in London and elsewhere. The auction for the cigarettes was due to close last night.
Meanwhile, his company’s Tuesday auction of Antiques & Collectibles also saw a collection of vintage wines and port, entered into sale by someone from Central Lincolnshire. Some ports were set to sell for more than £100 a bottle.
