A MARKET Rasen Police Sergeant has conquered Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa and raised cash for Victim Support.
Sergeant Nick Proctor (46) is responsible for local policing across Horncastle, Spilsby, Woodhall Spa, Tattershall, Coningsby and Wainfleet. He changed his police uniform for thermals and successfully summited Kilimanjaro on September 18.

Sgt P
roctor and his wife, Anna, were part of an organised eight-day expedition of sixteen people from across the UK to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. He said, “It was one of the hardest things I have ever done in my life, but to achieve it is fantastic. Being on the top of Africa was a fabulous although cold experience!”

Looking out from the summit of Kilimanjaro, the highest freestanding mountain in the world, Sgt Proctor could see the curve of the earth from the dizzy heights of 5,985 metres. Following his ascent he spent several days touring around various game reserves in Northern Tanzania and visited an orphanage in Mosquito River. “One of the most moving parts of our African experience was calling at an orphanage where we met children who have lost their parents, most to Aids. It was a really sobering and heart-wrenching experience,” said Sgt Proctor.

Raising funds for Victim Aid was another driving force behind the climb and he is hoping that between him and Anna they’ll raise around £1,000. Sgt Proctor said, “Victim Support is a very worthy charity and in my job I see the effect crime has on people. It’s really satisfying to raise money for a charity that supports victims, then I know that I’ll be giving something back to those who, through no fault of their own, have suffered.”

It’s back to work now for Sergeant Proctor, who lives in Market Rasen and has been at Horncastle Police Station for the past seven years, having joined Lincolnshire Police in 1992 transferring from West Yorkshire Police where he started his service in 1980.
