Friday, 4pm: WORK carried out at Market Rasen Cemetery to put right a catalogue of complaints stretching over years has been welcomed.
Following on from a Rasen Mail front page three weeks ago, West Lindsey finally carried out work, including the removal of a mound of earth, which had been the subject of complaints, grass cutting and pruning of overhanging trees.

West Lindsey District Council's Contracts Monitoring Officer, Anna Grieve, said she was aware there had been concern about conditions at the cemetery but bad weather and poor ground conditions had meant contractors had been unable to get their equipment on to the site.

Stone masons have also repaired headstones which caused short-term damage and disturbance.

"Work to the cemetery has now been completed and when the grass grows back I am sure the area will soon be looking its best again," said Mrs Grieve.

She stressed the council wanted all its cemeteries and churchyards to be in a good condition, but bad weather and poor ground conditions had meant that delays had been inevitable.

Margaret Lakin-Whitworth, who had made a series of complaints over at least five years, said she was very happy with the turn of events and rang Mrs Grieve to personally thank her for her careful attention.

"They've done such a good job up there, putting everything right. They took away nine tonnes of soil from the mound near my husband's grave and underneath they found a drain cover that had been blocked, which accounts for the flooding.

"They've dealt with the mole hills too and there's no longer a problem with the headstone being wobbly.

"I'd been asking personally and through the town council for five years to get these things done and it's only through the Rasen Mail's intervention that I've got anywhere."

Repairs to the fence are on hold until a land extension is sorted.
