A MIDDLE Rasen student is to cycle 1000 miles from Land's End to John O'Groats to raise money for Asthma UK and the Rotary Club charity seeking to eradicate polio globally.

Twenty year old Martin Smith, who is a student at Oxford University, will be supported by his family - Middle Rasen vicar the Rev Charles Patrick, mum Linda and three year old sister Claire - when he sets off next Monday (11).

Charles and Linda will take it in turns to cycle half a day with Martin - provided they don't hold him up - and follow him along the route in their car with Claire, who herself will start and finish the mammoth ride.

Although they are active leisure cyclists, this is the first time they have tackled something so long, although Martin has cycled the 150 miles back to university in a single day and has walked the length of Hadrian's Wall.

"It's the challenge," said Martin. "I'll keep on doing bigger and bigger things till I can find something I can't do."

Martin himself suffered from asthma as a child and still gets the occasional attack, so the charity is close to his heart, and for Charles, a keen Rotarian, it's his chance to do his bit for a Rotary charity.

You can pledge money to support him and follow his progress on lejog.maniacmartin.com or telephone 01673 842249 to donate
