Opening the 2014 programme for the Community Gardeners were Gail and John Summerfield, who offered advice and expertise on ‘Going for Gold’ the path they had taken along their way in the gardening world of showing.

And it had been a very successful journey for them.

Gail, a botanist and part time college lecturer, opened Westshores as a small retail nursery before being joined by John in 1995, where they now specialise in growing and propagating ornamental grasses.

Using slides to illustrate their talk, John and Gail introduced their audience to the world of showing for the enthusiastic gardener.

The showed the journey from starting out by entering classes at small local shows before progressing through experience to receiving the invitation to show at Chelsea.

And as they developed their skills with each show they entered it eventually led to winning the treasured gold cups.

Their amusing talk also showed the camaraderie between the stallholders, which adds to the pleasure of showing.
