DESPITE the unseasonal changes in weather, there was a good turnout of entries for Market Rasen Gardening Club’s autumn show.
Although the rose entries were down on previous years, there were a high number of exhibits in the vegetable and flower categories.
A total of 98 exhibits were entered from 21 people and there was even a monster parsnip in the any other vegetable category.
Judge, John Bennett, was delighted not only with the number of entries, but the quality of them too, considering the quite difficult growing conditions, starting with a dry spring which meant that seed was late in germinating.
This year’s overall winner was Cecile Povey, with a score of 21 points, who received The Gardening Club Shield.
The Marion Cooper Cup (vegetables and fruit) went to Derek Anderson, who scored 15 points and was closely followed by Cecile Povey on 13 points and Susan Jacobs on 12 points.
Winner of the Fred Green Memorial Cup was Helen Andrews, eight points, and in second place was Marion Cooper, six points, with a three-way tie for third place on five points between Sue Donaldson, Susan Jacobs and Jackie McCoy.
The Sellars Trophy for the Best Exhibit in Show was awarded to Sue Donaldson, who had entered an indoor plant with extremely striking foliage.
There was again keen competition for the Don Jebson Cup, with a good entry of pot grown geraniums, variety parade, which were purchased from the Club earlier in the year for this year’s special class, but the winner was Betty Pickett.
It has also been decided to bring forward the Autumn Show date to the first Tuesday in September.
