Strike hits school

Schoolchildren from De Aston and Market Rasen Junior School were enjoying an extra holiday this week 35 years ago when oil deliveries for their central heating systems were held up by picketing Texaco workers on Humberside.

De Aston boarders were sent home as soon as they arrived for the new term, while the other 1,000 pupils had just five hours of schooling before the ‘schools out’ was issued for an indefinite period.

Most smaller schools in the area, it was reported, were not affected as they were still heated by coal and electricity.
