A warm cosy chapel room was the venue for a talk by Dr Katy Hewis on the art of soap making.

After a roll call of ‘what gets you into a lather’ which seemed to be mainly the use of modern electrical equipment, Dr Hewis, a chemist, gave a lucid description of how to make soap by mixing oil or fat with alkali solution and fragrances.

The history of soap making threw up some well-known brands, from Port Sunlight to Detroit USA and red carbolic to Camay.

The WI’s version was yellow ducks and green and blue hearts.
