Women at the wheel of mighty machines

WOMEN are again being given an exclusuve opportunity to get behind the wheel of fire engines, tractors, HGVs and maybe even a JCB.

On Sunday, July 5, The Fire Fighters Charity will visit Manby Motorplex, near Louth, to give women the chance to drive a once in a lifetime variety of large and unusual vehicles in the ‘Ladies Driving Challenge’.

Participants will be able to try their hand at manoeuvring a range of different vehicles such as Fire Engines, 4x4’s, tractors, HGV’s and possibly JCB’s all kindly donated by local companies.

Louth Tractors are bringing a Case IH STX Steiger to the event which is featured on an episode of Top Gear where Richard Hammond takes part in the Tractor Challenge, the Case SDX Styger being his vehicle of choice. The vehicle weighs 24 tonnes, is Turbo charged and costs around 220,000 new!

Event Organiser, Laura Harden, said “The Ladies Driving Challenge promises to be an exciting day, with the chance to operate a fantastic collection of vehicles often associated with male drivers. Other types of driving event can be uncomfortably competitive with an emphasis on speed, and this has been known to put off some women.

“The Women-only Challenge is much more relaxed with the focus on handling vehicles with skill and enjoying new experiences, as well as raising money for a good cause. Last year we raised nearly 6000 and we want help in exceeding that this year.’

All women over the age of 17 with a full driving licence are welcome to join in the fun. Registration costs 10 and entrants are asked to raise a minimum of 90 in sponsorship.

All proceeds will go to The Fire Fighters Charity.

To take part in the Ladies Driving Challenge, entrants should call Laura Harden on 07798 725560 or email lharden@firefighterscharity.org.uk or online at: www.firefightercharity.org.uk/event.
