Plans put in place for Mystery Play
THE MEDIEVAL tradition of the Mystery Play will be brought to life again this summer in Lincoln.
And although the plays are not due to be performed until July, the creative process is building already, with casting set to start within a few weeks.
Community groups, organisations and individuals are invited to join the ongoing weekly workshops exploring the script and its themes and concepts and will also be welcome at the big event on February 12, where the vision and schedule for the July plays will be outlined and the casting process begun.
Artistic director John Bowtell said anyone with a curiosity about the Mysteries and community theatre should feel engaged as the plays emerge through joint exploration.
“I’m really keen to widen the appeal of the Mysteries and involve participants from all sectors, whether they have any theatrical and acting experience or not.
“My vision is to return the plays to their origins in that they are essentially all about groups of people coming together to produce one play as part of a larger series of plays.
“I imagine we might have, for instance, a group of university students, a cluster of clergymen, a few schoolchildren and maybe some builders, each telling a single story such as Noah, Baptism, Nativity or Crucifixion – just as the Medieval Guilds of Traders would have done.”
Precise arrangements for the performance are still being developed, but the main focus will be on the Cathedral from July 7 to 21.
Meanwhile, the workshops take place at the city’s Bishop Grosseteste University College in Newport, on Sundays from 2.30pm to 6pm and on Wednesdays, 6.30pm to 9pm.
