Oriental experience marks National Libraries Day

There's more to libraries than books

There's more to libraries than books

Libraries at Caistor and Market Rasen looked to the East to mark National Libraries day on Saturday.

To coincide with the Chinese New Year, staff and volunteers welcomed in the Year of the Snake with some craft activities.

Children - and adults - had great fun making lanterns, masks, dragons and snakes as well as a red envelope, which is the traditional way the Chinese give money at the New Year.

Pictured right enjoying the fun at Caistor are Mark and Katie Dann, Geraldine Edis (cultural services advisor), Diane and Dougie Weir, Morton and Duncan Weir, Karen Hyde (volunteer), Caroline and Emma Charlesworth and, front, Melissa Hewitt and Jessica Wall.

This is just one of the many activities run by the libraries throughout the year.

Next up for children is the Bush Tucker Challenge for five to 11 year olds, taking place at Caistor on February 18 from 2pm to 3.30pm and at Market Rasen on February 19, from 10am to 11.30am.

Caistor Library is part of the Arts and Heritage Centre at 28 Plough Hill.

Other activities for children planned at the venue include making a Mother’s Day card on March 9, and Eggtastic Fun on March 28, as well as an Easter egg hunt and quiz on March 30.

Making a time capsule, Father’s Day cards, story telling and more crafts are also planned through the year.

To find out more, pick up one of the brochures at the Arts and Heritage Centre, which shows all the events and activities taking place there.
