Joe’s fascinating life story holds library audience captivated on book tour

Market Rasen author Joe Willisch held listeners spellbound at Welton Library last week.
He told tales of his Czechoslovakian birthplace and the consequent journey that resulted in his British Citizenship.
Through no choice of his own, as a young Czechoslovakian, Joe was drafted into the Hitler Youth as a 17–year–old student and then into the German Army during the Second World War.
He was injured four times but survived the fighting, the hard labour camps and the prisoner of war camps to escape to England where he met his adoring wife and start a loving family.
It was his daughters who persuaded Joe to put pen to paper and tell the truth of his extraordinary life.
His book, ‘Steps in the Dark’ was available on the night to buy at £14, but Joe also made a very generous donation to each of the nine West Lindsey Libraries.
The book will be available shortly for loan through Lincolnshire Library Service.
Joe’s story was enhanced by James Hay Barr, a local story teller who accompanied Joe and read relevant excerpts from his book to bring his personal story to life revealing Joes family connections to the Schubert and Schindler families.
Joe is due to take his talk to audiences at Caistor, Market Rasen and Keelby Libraries so look out for the dates of this extraordinary man’s life story.
