Heritage centre welcomes new model exhibit
A model of the Brigg Raft pictured on arrival in the town's new Heritage Centre at the Angel. From the left - Harvey Rudkin, Chairman of the Northern Lincolnshire Rural Local Action Group, Rose Nicholson Collections Manager for North Lincolnshire Museum Services and Coun Rob Waltham.
The bronze age raft is believed to date from around 600bc
It was originally discovered in the late 1800s, but recovered.
The raft was finally uncovered again in the 1970s and salvaged
Archaeologists have two theories as to the boat’s original purpose - one is that the flat bottomed boat was needed as a ferry across the Ancholme; the other idea is that it was round hulled and capable of ocean going.
The raft will be on display at Brigg Heritage Centre in the town’s market place from January 2013
