From California to Memphis... and on to the Hope Tavern

BLUES fans are in for a treat this Sunday when Lightnin’ Willie and The Poorboys bring their Let the Blues Open the Door to Your Soul tour to the area.

Despite their name, they are by no means a bunch of musical destitutes.

The tradition they mine has a richness indeed – with the simple line-up of guitar, bass, drums, and harmonica they are equally able to evoke the stripped-down stylings of Muddy Waters and the more sophisticated orchestrations of T-Bone Walker, as well as the funkier side of Stax artists such as Albert King.

Willie plays an in-the-pocket style of electric guitar totally void of grandstanding.

His original compositions and arrangements have helped him to sustain a loyal and ever-growing fan base in the USA, UK and Europe.

After winning the Southern California Blues competition, the band headed for Memphis to compete in the International Blues Challenge, where their approach won them praise from judges, musicians and attendees from all over the world.

Lightnin’ Willie, Giles King, Aaron McRobbie and Nobbie Richards will be playing at the Hope Tavern in Holton le Moor this Sunday, September 2, from 4pm and the door charge is £7.
