Film classics out on DVD

ONE OF the real pluses of the dvd is that film classics from the 50s and 60s are now being released in the format, enabling you to see them at home - long since they left the cinema screens.

Four releases from specialists Digital Classics, are the latest to tempt you, with Green Mansions, starring Anthony Perkins and Audrey Hepburn, Kaleidoscope with Warren Beatty and Susannah York, Petulia with Julie Christie and George C Scott and Lisztomania with Roger Daltrey and Ringo Starr.

Green Mansions is set in 19th century South America and is a story of revenge, innocence and love with a young man searching for gold to hire soldiers to avenge his father's death and finding 'wild child' Audrey Hepburn. One of her lesser known roles, it will delight the hundreds of Hepburn fans.

Kaleidoscope is about a man trying to cheat the casinos but is caught out after falling for the daughter of a Scotland Yard detective.

Petulia stars the lovely Julie Christie, who recently visited Louth Film Club, and is set during the swinging sixties in San Francisco, telling the story of an abused wife and her affair with a recently divorced doctor.

Finally, the flamboyant Lisztomania tells the scandalous tale of composer Franz Liszt and his hedonistic lifestyle of groupies, sex and music. How appropriate it should star 60s rock star Roger Daltrey as Liszt and - believe it or not - Ringo Starr as the Pope! One of the great 60s films.

They are available from shops.
